Film Intro: A Safe Distance

What happens when escaping one dangerous relationship leads you straight into another?

"A SAFE DISTANCE" by Gloria Mercer (Canada 🇨🇦) is a queer feminist thriller set deep in the Canadian wilderness. 🌲

Alex’s romantic forest getaway unravels when she rejects her boyfriend Joey’s surprise proposal and he abandons her. Stranded, she meets Kianna and Matt, an enigmatic couple living off the grid, who invite her into their world. As unexpected desires and connections emerge, Alex discovers they are fugitives wanted for violent bank robberies, blurring the lines between desire, loyalty, danger and survival.

Atmospheric, tense and unpredictable, "A Safe Distance" challenges conventional ideas of the “strong female character” while exploring power, intimacy and the relationships we choose or find ourselves trapped within.

Gloria Mercer is an award-winning director from Vancouver, Canada. Passionate about bringing complex women to the screen, her work spans genres while questioning traditional representations of female strength and agency.

"A Safe Distance" celebrated its world premiere at SXSW and went on to screen at festivals including Frameline LGBTQ+ Film Festival, Fantasia International Film Festival and Vancouver International Film Festival. 👏
